Ivinghoe Beacon – Pitstone Circular Walk (8.1 miles)

IMPORTANT: If you wish to follow my same route, I am not responsible for the safety or well-being of anyone who wishes to do so. Please see here for full disclaimer.

Highlights:

• Fantastic views over The Chilterns.
• Visit Pitstone Windmill en-route.
• Views of Pitstone Quarry.

My Route:

Starting at the Ivinghoe Beacon Car Park (LU6 2EG), cross down the grass hill and steer left. Follow the route straight ahead until you are on lower ground and see the large hill on your right. Steer right and follow the path up and over the hill, keep heading up and you will eventually reach the Ivinghoe Beacon.

Once you reach the beacon, take the path to your right and follow this to the gate. Turn left at the gate and follow the path down the hill to the next gate. Pass through another gate and cross over the road (carefully), taking the road in front of you (Chapel Lane). This is a small part of the walking route which is on road, please be careful and use the grass verges at the side of the road if needed. A few hundred yards down you’ll reach a sign ‘Ivinghoe Aston’ and a small green with a bench, turn left here. Follow the path in front of you as you turn left, do not take the path which is back towards the way you came.

After some time, the path will eventually lead you onto a residential road (Wellcroft). Walk to the end of the road and turn right at The Rose and Crown pub onto Vicarage Lane. Steer right onto Church Road, passing the local shops and Post Office. Take the second road on your left after the Post Office (Green Lane), beware the street name is hidden. Follow the road down until you reach a gate and enter. You won’t miss the Pitstone Windmill. it’ll be right in front of you.

Return Journey:

After you’ve visited the windmill, jump back on the path you were on heading in the direction you first saw after entering the gate. You’ll eventually reach a gate, leave the gate and cross over the road (carefully). You’ll need to take the first road on your right (Church Road). Follow it to the end leading into woodlands and eventually open fields.

Continue straight through the fields until Westfield Road. Head left on the road crossing over the roundabout up North Field Road. There is a small walking track next to woodland, follow this up on the left and you’ll see a small entrance to enter the woodland. Steer right in the woodland and follow the path round. Keep heading up the hills straight and you’ll reach Pitstone Hill, overlooking the quarry lake.

Go through a gate up and over the hill to the path that steer left. Keep heading over the hill and out of the gate, cross the road into the next field. Keep following the fields up and you’ll eventually reach a path within woodlands. Keep walking until the path provides an option to go right and this’ll lead you back to the car park.

Please stay safe, social distance and respect your surroundings.
