Top 5 takeaways in Luton

With lockdown restrictions getting tougher, we all face the prospect of spending an uncomfortable amount of time on the sofa, so it seems like the perfect time to try and find the silver lining. Staying in has fast become the new ‘out out’, so we may as well grab the Just Eat app and get stuck right in.

I’ve summed up my favourite takeaways in Luton that always hit the spot!

Happy Friend Fish Bar

Sometimes when I’m having a stressful or tough day, only a greasy chip will do, or when I’m completely ravenous and can’t be arsed to cook. See, a chippy is totally universal and covers all life’s occasions and emotions. So what’s so good about Happy Friend? Well they’re my absolute go-to, and I’ll tell you for why…

Curry sauce is an absolute MUST for me and they make it SPOT ON! None of this watery jellied crap I see in most chip shops, this is the real deal Chinese Shop curry sauce. And as for the chips, they are so soft and fluffy inside that they practically melt in your mouth.

Chicken George

The A list of Chicken Shops.

I cannot get enough of the combinations of flavours in this place and you can’t beat the quality of the chicken here, it’s always fantastic. I’m still yet to try half of the menu. I always try something new and then become obsessed with it for months, I really need to get out of my chicken comfort zone.

Does anyone else order way too much off the menu and end up sitting in a food coma for the rest of the evening? Waste not, want not and all that.

The Greek Pitta

New kid on the block, The Greek Pitta, has fast become one of my favourites and for good reason. I love bread, meat and I’m a sucker for tzatziki, so it’s an all round win from me.

They’re speciality is Gyros and they are a must try! For a more detailed review, check out my blog post on this one here. In the meantime, I couldn’t recommend this takeaway enough.

Greengage Tree

So this place has been my dirty little secret for a while now. I kind of kept it hidden, no idea why to be honest. Too busy stuffing my face with Vegan burgers probably.

I’ve been ordering from this little Vegan place via Just Eat for months now and I’m still yet to share it – shocking! They’ve just opened an actual sit-in cafe in Luton, which I’m still yet to try but I thought I’d share my thoughts on the takeaway side of things.

Let’s get straight to the food: The double cheese patty burgers are my absolute go-to and my side-piece is ALWAYS the hash browns. The chips are a little over-flavoured for me so I order the browns with the chunky burger sauce! One time, they swapped the burger sauce for a watered down imposter. I can tell the difference, don’t play me like that.

To be honest this has probably been the most reoccurring takeaway I’ve had this year so it had to make this list.

Red Rooster

Real talk.

I only eat in 3 chicken shops in Luton, this is one of them. I have become a chicken snob and I’m not sorry. Yes of course I used to eat chicken from all the 1 star hygiene rated places at 3am back in the day, but frankly we all deserve better than that. The quality of the chicken is key and Red Rooster never lets me down with ‘ganky’ chicken. If you know, you know.

I love how clean and spotless this shop is inside, so it’s not a surprise they have 5 star rating.

Sometimes I like to eat in to enjoy the side salad they pop on your plate. Plus you can take advantage of using as much sweet chilli and garlic as you can possibly manage! I would pay good money for that chilli sauce.

Side note: Unfortunately, they do not deliver and it’s my biggest pet peeve about this place. Do I want to get off my arse and drive down to collect on a Saturday night? No, I don’t! Sort it out man.
